Humanism and the Dravidian Movement – A Success Story, the booklet written by Dr. Kannabiran Ravishankar, is an eye-opening read for many Westerners and a helpful overview for others. Too many assume that the drive for religious freedom and secular government was rooted in France and the United States, not realizing how such concepts have benefited from movements around the world, and in particular, in South India. Laying out a timeline that begins before the Non-Brahmin Manifesto of 1916 (predating the first international Humanist Manifesto by nearly two decades) one can see the robust humanistic culture of Tamil Nadu from those times through to the present.
